The personal computer has never been more personal. Consider email, and the things people choose to write and the files they choose to attach. People routinely trust email systems with their private correspondence, diary entries, secrets and gossip, addresses, household budget details, holiday snaps, and in some cases even their bank details.

Security is an important element of
any Web business. When you are examining your security, you should ask yourself,
“What am I protecting? What is my crown jewel?” For a leading soft drink manufacturer,
their crown jewel might be the recipe or the proportions of the key
ingredients. While they would undoubtedly strive to protect other areas of
their business, such as employee records in their HR department, they would
spare no expense to protect their recipe since leaking it could destroy their
business.

recently had a chance to sit down with online backup provider, Intronis’, CEO
and co-founder, Sam Gutmann. In the late
1990s, while working as a small business consultant, Gutmann and his two
colleagues discovered that many of their clients were not properly backing up
their data. In 2000, the three began
researching and developing a backup service that would eliminate the need for
tapes, disks, and CDs and instead would offer an offsite, secure, and easy-to-use
backup service. After three years of
research, development, software design and testing, they launched their
foundational product, eSureIT, in 2003 and Intronis Technologies (http://www.Intronis.com)was
founded. Gutmann is a graduate of the
Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Management Information
Systems.

Confidential print data is often sent through a network as clear text without any appropriate protection. It happens even though current data protection acts require institutions and enterprises to protect personal data from unauthorized access. A careful analysis of existing security risks is the first step towards efficient protection.
Every organization has confidential data and documents that have to be protected from unauthorized access. Digitally created documents are distributed and managed in the respective organization's infrastructure, often within document management (DMS) or enterprise content management (ECM) systems. Compliance is a prevalent business concern here, companies must stay in accordance with established guidelines, specifications, or legislation. Data protection and the obligation to preserve records both fall under this umbrella. Therefore compliance includes the identification and minimization of security risks for such documents.
